The construction was approved on 28 June 1938 by the Flood Control Act. In August 1939, the spillway, the dam and the outlet were built and completed in February 1944. During this time the dam known as the largest dam filled rolling land in the U.S.. In March 1945, the first hydroelectric turbine installed and used. Another unit is installed and operated in September 1949.
